2024 Summer Reading Information:
Research has shown that students who DO NOT read over the summer can lose one to three months of progress in reading. Students who DO read over the summer and have involved parental support with reading can actually gain achievement in reading.
Reading is a powerful way to keep young minds engaged, particularly over the long summer, and that by reading thought provoking books, students will continue to be thinking, imagining, and learning new skills important to their future academic success.
This year’s summer homework is designed to help students get a jump start on the 2024-2025 school year. St. Bernadette Catholic School participates in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program.
The AR Program allows us to test our students’ reading comprehension with a specific quiz for books in the AR system. The system also records total words read by the students.
Our summer reading program for returning students will ensure there are academic gains and will give them a jump start towards their yearly word count goal. Below are the required reading assignments.
Students should be prepared during the first week of school to take AR quizzes.
We encourage our students to read beyond the requirement and you can check that the books they choose are AR books by visiting www.arbookfind.com.
Kinder: Make a list of 10 AR books read over the summer. Read daily with your child.
- We recommend reading the same book 3-4 times and talking about the story’s details to start building their reading comprehension skills.
- Check to be sure the books you are reading are AR books by searching on www.arbookfind.com
